Do you believe the statement “breast-feeding is the best weight control after baby”?
all of the women in my life are telling me that the best way to loose/control weight after you ahve a baby is to breast feed…
has this been true for you?

why/how could this be?

Yes. I gained a lot of weight while I was pregnant. I quit smoking and I abandoned my usually healthy lifestyle and went nuts on processed junk. So, I packed on about 60lbs. After I gave birth I didn’t lose as much as I had hoped in the hospital, or for awhile thereafter. Between 3 and 6 months the rest melted off.
I had gone back to my healthy habits and exercised a bit, so I would have lost it all eventually, but I have no doubt that nursing accelerated my Weight Loss.
“why/how could this be?”
Milk production burns calories. The common number thrown around is 500, I don’t think there’s any research to back up any specific number as it’s likely a highly individual thing but. Most professionals, advocates, and laypersons agree on the 500 so it’s perhaps thought to be an average.
Either way, it does burn a good amount.
In addition to that, nursing mothers tend to have better habits. They tend to eat better, drink more water, and get more exercise. Not all of course, but a lot do.
